Manchester United can only acquire Marc Cucurella from Chelsea if they are willing to spend more than they are now giving.
The loan arrangement for the Spanish player is worth $5 million less to one team than the other.
An offer to loan the defender to Manchester United for the season was filed on Tuesday.
Chelsea is willing to let the 25-year-old depart Stamford Bridge this summer, but the club requires that his salary be paid in full, in addition to a £7 million loan fee.
In 2022, Chelsea paid Brighton £62 million to acquire Cucurella.
The fullback is wanted by Manchester United, but Manchester United’s $2 million deal has been rejected by Chelsea.
The two teams are currently in negotiations to work out a compromise.
The Spaniard wants to join Erik ten Hag’s Red Devils after leaving Chelsea.
