Subscribers should be aware that MTN Nigeria Communications PLC plans to deactivate SIM cards without National Identity Numbers (NINs) after receiving a warning notice.

On or before February 28, 2024, MTN informed customers that these specific SIM cards would no longer be able to use its network. In a statement released by the firm’s secretary, Uto Ukpanah, the company stressed that this move is in line with a mandate that is industry-wide and requires the deactivation of phone lines that have not filed NINs by the given date.

According to the business, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has ordered it to block users who do not have NINs from accessing the network.

According to MTN, if five or more lines are associated with an unverified NIN, the service will be disabled on or before March 29, 2024. This is about NINs that have been submitted but not verified.

Also, by April 15, 2024, any NIN with fewer than five lines associated with it must be prohibited. Prior to unbarring any impacted subscribers’ lines, verification of their biometrics and biodata is required.

In response to an instruction from the NCC dated 4 April 2022, operators are now required to implement one-way banning on outgoing calls for users whose lines are not linked to NINs.

To further encourage the impacted subscribers to submit their NINs for verification, we are engaging them through all of our platforms. The business announced that as part of these initiatives, they are increasing the capacity of their several service outlets to streamline and improve the process.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and MTN are collaborating to speed up the NIN verification process, and MTN is dedicated to making sure its users follow the NCC regulations.

We are grateful for the government’s endeavor to establish a National Identity Management system that is both dependable and long-lasting; this system is an essential tool for national and economic growth.

“Furthermore, MTN Nigeria Communications PLC will continue to keep investors apprised of developments and possible consequences, by our operating license requirements and our commitment to being a law-abiding corporate citizen. This will be done in conjunction with the release of our FY 2023 results.”

Subscribing customers who have not yet linked their NIN to their lines are being asked by the business to do so immediately by visiting any MTN outlet or utilizing any of its digital channels before the deadlines.

All across the country, there are NIMC enrollment facilities where anyone can sign up for an NIN if they don’t already have one.

“To the Secretary of Uto Ukpanah FCIS Company,” it read.
