Gbenga Elegbeleye, chairman of the board of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), has announced that random testing will henceforth be performed in the premier division.
Elegbeleye claims the action is an effort to eliminate any drug use in the league.
According to Elegbeleye, the NPFL board has already imported testing equipment from the UK.
“We are committed to joining the NFF, CAF, FIFA, and the global campaign to eradicate illicit substance use in sports and this will begin soon with random tests of our players,” Elegbeleye told NPFL media.
“We are prepared to arrest and eradicate drug use in the league wherever it exists, and we intend to work with relevant government agencies to launch an awareness campaign that will include displays on our stadium scoreboards,” the statement read.
