The UK Telegraph reports that Chelsea turned down a bid for James Maddison because of the club’s recruitment philosophy.
After much negotiation, Maddison finally agreed to a £40 million transfer to Tottenham Hotspur.
The English midfielder has been quite productive since his arrival, contributing to two goals and several assists in the Premier League.
Although Chelsea has spent over a billion dollars in just over a year, they passed on Maddison, whose Leicester City team was relegated last season.
This opened the door for Tottenham, another London club.
Due to his incompatibility with the Blues’ current recruitment strategy, the club decided against making a move to acquire Maddison. As Maddison will turn 27 in November, he does not fit the Blues’ stated policy of only signing players under the age of 25 this summer.
