Government of Zamfara launches health care outreach initiative

The government of Zamfara State has launched a modified medical outreach program to better meet the people’s urgent healthcare requirements and enhance their standard of living.

Free cataract extractions, groin swelling (hernia and hydrocele) repairs, vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) repairs, and health education are all part of the first phase of the medical outreach, which is being organized in conjunction with the office of Hajiya Huriyya Dauda Lawal, the First Lady of Zamfara State.

According to a statement released by the governor’s official spokesperson on Sunday, the modified medical outreach has already helped 81 people with eye cataracts and 49 people with swollen groins since it began last Friday.

He elaborated that each month, 1,000 cataract patients and 200 vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) repair patients would be served by the specialized outreach program.

From the statement: “The Zamfara State Government established a committee of experts who assessed various service centers in the state to identify the most common surgical problems prevalent in the general population.”

Based on their research, the committee has prioritized four areas for intervention in the first year of the program: cataract removal, swelling groin (hernia, hydrocele), vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) repairs, and health education.

It’s unprecedented for the government of Zamfara to provide free healthcare to so many people in such remote locations. Tele-screening is used in the ongoing outreach to bring expert treatment to underserved patients in rural and semi-urban locations.

Patients can now be screened from a distance and treated at approved treatment centers in Gusau according to a new technique.

The Committee has visited the Drugs and Medical Consumables Management Agency (DMCMA) in Gusau and is confident in its ability to supply the necessities for the outreach plan.

To show his commitment to improving health care and his caring nature, Governor Dauda Lawal expanded the program to all 14 of the State’s local government areas. General Hospital Gusau, King Fahad General Hospital, and Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital are the hubs from which outreach services are provided. The Federal Medical Centre in Gusau would be referred to for all exceptional instances.
