The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have called for a statewide indefinite strike, and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has decided to join them.
On Monday, ASUU told its members to begin participating in the strike at midnight.
Emmanuel Osodeke, the union’s national president, announced the union’s stance in a circular to the union’s zonal coordinators and chairpersons.
“As an NLC affiliate, our union is directing all of its members to support NLC’s action to defend Nigerian workers and union officials.
Our members should be quickly mobilized to take part in the action via our zone coordinators and branch chairs.
The NLC and the TUC, as previously reported, had written to its affiliates instructing them to begin the nationwide strike at midnight on Monday.
The attack on NLC President Joe Ajaero has prompted the strike, with many believing that the Nigerian police and the government of Imo State were responsible.
