Posted by Nuhu Zaria and his girlfriend Bunmi Samuel, both suspected of being thieves who specialize in stealing mobile phones and cash, have been arrested by the Federal Capital Territory Police Command.
While parading the suspects on Thursday, Police Commissioner Haruna G. Garba claimed that after stealing phones, Nuhu would take out the SIM cards and sell them, while his girlfriend would use the stolen phones to steal money from victims by entering bank USSD numbers.
He claimed that 76 SIM cards and other materials were retrieved from the accused by command operatives linked to the Durumi Police Division.
He said, “Operatives assigned to the Durumi Police Division followed a tip about a man named Nuhu Zaria’m’ who specializes in stealing GSM phones from unsuspecting commuters, and they were able to apprehend him.” Then, he gives the SIM cards to his girlfriend, one Bunmi Samuel, and proceeds to steal another phone.
The girlfriend, on the other hand, is responsible for withdrawing any and all funds stored on the SIM cards. So far, police have been able to retrieve 76 SIM cards, 2 Opay ATM cards, and a gold wristwatch from the criminals.
The female suspect admitted to being involved in the firm for over a year when she spoke with BANKPAWA shortly after the CP briefed journalists.
More over a year has passed since we first started this. We typically use the bank’s USSD code to send the money to a mobile wallet.
We utilize the code to withdraw funds from the victim’s bank account as soon as we gain access to it.
The vast majority of SIM cards already have bank accounts linked to them for use with mobile banking. Since I started, I have not even made N500,000.
I’m sorry for what I’ve done, and I promise I’ll never hurt anyone again.
The CP said the probe will result in an arraignment in court.
