Juan Mata, formerly of Spain’s national team, has signed as a free agent with Japanese club Vissel Kobe.
The Japanese club issued a statement on Sunday confirming the news.
Mata joined the Takayuki Yoshida-coached team after leaving Turkish club Galatasaray in the summer. Mata was a member of Spain’s World Cup-winning squad in South Africa in 2010.
Kobe are currently in second position in the J.League, one point behind the first-place Yokohama F. Marinos.
Today they face Kyoto Sanga, and a win will put them in first place.
Mata, who formerly played for Valencia, Chelsea, and Manchester United, joined Kobe after being without a club since leaving Galatasaray.
