NNPP leader Oguntoyinbo warns the federal government and the national assembly against allowing governors to undermine the authority of local governments

Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, a prominent member of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Ogun State, has called on the federal government to give municipalities more power.

He remarked that this was essential for their proper operation.

Local government autonomy would strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and stabilize its existence, according to the NNPP gubernatorial candidate in Ogun State in 2023.

He urged the Congress and the President to grant all powers to the state and municipal governments.

The NNPP leader said in a statement obtained by DAILY POST on Saturday that it is undemocratic for state governments to continue chipping away at local government’s authority and responsibilities by instituting a caretaker administration structure.

He said that delegating power to local governments would be the best way to ensure that people in rural areas could benefit from democracy.

The continued erosion of Local Government’s powers and functions by State governments across the country through the implementation of a caretaker administration system is undemocratic.

Its implementation into a fully democratic framework is an anomaly in the current administration of the country.

It fascinates me that many state governments have assumed the responsibilities of local governments despite the fact that the country’s federal system of governance guarantees that each level of government has its own sphere of influence.
