Rio Ferdinand compares the MLS and the Saudi Pro League in preparation for Ronaldo vs. Messi

Posted by

Rio Ferdinand, a former Manchester United player, has claimed the Saudi Pro League (SPL) is superior to the Major League Soccer (MLS), implying that Cristiano Ronaldo has been unfairly maligned in favor of his old adversary Lionel Messi.

Both Ronaldo and Messi have recently moved away from Europe to pursue new opportunities on other continents.

In January, the Portugal captain moved to SPL powerhouse Al-Nassr, while in July, the Argentine captain signed with MLS’s Inter Miami.

Both of these forwards have been fantastic for their clubs this season.

See how the public and the media reacted when Lionel Messi moved to the United States and Cristiano Ronaldo went to Saudi Arabia, Ferdinand remarked (via Transfer News Live on X).

“When a player comes to the United States, you welcome him with open arms, but in Saudi Arabia, he is attacked. Do you really want to convince me that the United States of America is a utopia?

He continued, “If I hadn’t retired altogether, there’s no question in my mind that I’d be in Saudi Arabia right now.” Who are these people? The Saudi Pro League is not inferior to Major League Soccer.
