Barely a few hours after Peter Obi addressed the nation over the Supreme Court verdict, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Wahab Shittu, urged the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the last general elections to stop criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s victory and send his congratulatory message to him.
Remember that Obi protested the Apex Court’s ruling on Tinubu’s victory in the February 25, 2023, election, which was upheld by the court on October 26, 2023.
According to him, the ruling completely undermines the faith of the Nigerian people in the judicial system.
On Monday’s episode of Channels Television’s Politics Today, Shittu responded by saying that no matter the outcome, there must be a victor.
He added that Obi should be able to draw a link with sportsmanship and realize that loss is a necessary component of the game.
“There can’t be a winner without a loser in a competition. A true sportsman knows how to take loss gracefully. The senior attorney replied, “Mr. Peter Obi wasn’t just second; he was third.”
He took his case to the tribunal and was turned down. His second attempt at a Supreme Court appeal was also unsuccessful. As a good democratic citizen, I believe he should publicly declare his support for the victor and offer his congratulations.
Thus, the question remains: how exactly does one go about criticizing a court’s ruling? It’s only on the basis of justification that you can oppose such a verdict,” he remarked.
