IGP Kayode Egbetokun has ordered a crackdown on the attackers responsible for the deaths of eight security personnel in Imo State on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, unidentified gunmen invaded the Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, killing many security personnel. The victims worked for the police, the military, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC.

A video that has gone viral claims that the security officers were murdered and their patrol car was set on fire.

The incident was condemned by the Police Department’s upper echelons, and the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, released a statement on Wednesday promising to track down and prosecute those responsible.

According to the statement, the attackers ambushed the victims as they were responding to a phony distress call.

The statement says, in part, that “the Inspector-General of Police, Ag. IGP Kayode Egbetokun has, however, assured the public that the NPF is fully committed to collaborating closely with other relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and comprehensive investigation into this heinous act while relentlessly pursuing the cause of justice.”

Assuring the public that the police will do everything in their power to ensure the security of their neighborhoods and the well-being of their officers, he urges them to stay calm and watchful.

In addition, he requested that the people of Imo State and the rest of the country work with law enforcement to ensure the safety of everyone.

Ag. IGP Olukayode Egbetokun “equally extended thoughts and prayers to the families of the fallen heroes, pledging that the sacrifices made by their loved ones will not be in vain.”
